Blue light, yay or nay?
As you know I use glasses, and so does most of my family. I’ve used glasses since I started 8th grade. Buying new pairs is an effort and something I wait as long as I can before I do. Glasses are an expensive necessity, well until now.
For a long time now I’ve been looking for a new pair of glasses. Not any glasses, computer glasses, the ones with the special glass that filters the blue light from LCD monitors.
I’ve been looking around and specially on the ones from Gunnar’s. But they are expensive. Not only so, but also yellow. Every time I’ve consider it, and showed it to my friends/ colleagues they’ve laughed and pointed out that I would look even more like a nerd with those kind of glasses. I normally don’t care what people think when it comes to stuff like that, but even I see that it would look ridiculous.
A while ago I found the Holy Grail, PC glasses that aren’t yellow, and even better, they half the price of those I’ve been looking at before. They look like normal glasses. They use something called Blue Block glass; it filters out some of the blue light you get from the pc monitor. It’s supposed to protect your eyes. And for me, sitting all day at work with computers (2-5 monitors around me) and at home (2-3 monitors at the same time) I suspect this will help me out a lot.
I did some research and found Extra Optical, they have this fairly new product, and you can choose between different types of good looking glasses. All you need is the prescription from you optic, with the stats of the glasses you use today, or if you remember the stats. Choose glasses – fill inn specifications /stats - then you can modify it as you wish. You can even buy extra equipment for it if you wish. The customer support is surprisingly good. It’s almost as going into a normal store.
I do most of my shopping online, so this is great for me. I don’t really care for going to a store and use much time, waiting in line, having to talk to people and so on.
Extra Optical ships worldwide with no shipping fees.
So I think I have found IT. Have I? I’m going to test some of these glasses, the glasses with blue block and a pair of sunglasses.
First off, what is blue light? Is it good or bad? What does the studies say?
Here is what I found:
Blue block makes you sleep better
You may have heard that those orange glasses will help you sleep. Or that people who use the computer a lot have trouble sleeping. Is this true, and why?
Increasingly, researchers are finding that artificial light from some devices at night may tinker with brain chemicals that promote sleep. Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute showed that exposure to light from computer tablets significantly lowered levels of the hormone melatonin, which regulates our internal clocks and plays a role in the sleep cycle.
You can read more about that study here
Blue light helps fighting depression
"Blue light is emerging as particularly beneficial for mood regulation. One study from researchers of the Light Research Program at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia found that blue light strengthens and stimulates connections between areas of your brain that process emotion and language.
This means that blue light may, in turn, help people to better handle emotional challenges and regulate mood over time. Blue light may be even more effective than the bright white light often used in light boxes to treat SAD and other forms of depression. And a 2006 study found that blue light also worked better than red light in treating SAD symptoms.
Blue light is prevalent in outdoor light, so your body absorbs the most during the summer and much less in the winter. Because of this, the researchers suggested that adding blue light to indoor atmospheres, as opposed to the standard yellow lights typically used, may help boost mood and productivity year-round, and especially during the winter." - Mercola.com
But in big doses, as when you sit by the computer screen all day, it has a negative effect on your body. Everything in moderation as they say.
How Computer Glasses Work
Computer glasses are special-purpose eyeglasses meant to optimize your eyesight when you're looking at digital screens. They're designed to: reduce glare (a major cause of eyestrain), increase contrast, and maximize what you see through the lenses—making it easier to look at a screen for longer periods of time.
My personal experience with blue block glasses
So, I’ve been testing my new glasses. Two pairs, one with blue block, and sunglasses. They were both delivered, neatly packed in separate cases. They were delivered with a simple but efficient tool to loosen or tighten the screws. Very handy, this is something I’ve needed before, luckily I have computer tools which is small enough for this. But here if follows, or you can order it, neat.
The glasses are as nice looking as I could see on their webpage, no surprises there. The computer glasses, come with Blue Block filter. As I mentioned above, it’s common for those kind of glasses to be really yellow or orange. These are supposed to be like normal glasses. When I hold them up, you can’t see any sign of the filter, neither when I wear them. The only time you will see it are if you put it on a white background and then in the right light you’ll see a faint yellow-ish glare.
I sit by the computer most of the day, both at work and home. It didn’t take me long to feel the difference with the new glasses, I don’t get nearly as tired in my eyes as I used to be. For me this is game changing.
When I wear them I can see a small difference in the colours, they seem a bit warmer than usual. I don’t really mind that; it makes everything seem a bit happier. Which is nice in a city as here, where it rains most of the time and therefor has a grey sky. But the difference is small enough for me to have no problem wearing them all day, even away from the computer.
I really enjoy the glasses, and yes they make a big difference working with the computer.
I also got a pair of sunglasses, sadly there’s no sun here these days. I look forward to use them when the sun shows up. The glasses are dark and makes things look blue/grey, which I prefer over brown. They are smooth and fit my face. Seems to be made of good quality.
Cheap, like half or a third the price I normally pay. Online witch very good customer service and good quality without charging for just a brand.
Am I buying from them in the future? Yes!
Would I recommend them to others? I recommend them to all of you! Check them out HERE
